Today, February 18th, 2017, The Republic of the Gambia celebrated 52 years of Independence from Great Britain. On this day also, some 15 heads of state, including President Macky Sall of Senegal, and other ECOWAS presidents attended the simultaneous Inauguration of President Adama Barrow, on his election victory on December 19th, 2016.
It would be recalled that President Barrow was already Inaugurated on February 19th, 2017, at The Gambian embassy in Dakar, Senegal, during the political impasse when Dictator Yaya Jammeh refused to surrender power, triggering a massive humanitarian crisis. This Inauguration was done to satisfy the Gambian population who felt denied the opportunity by the political impasse. It was the largest event held on Gambian soil, with the Independence Stadium filling up at 5am GMT, and that is 5hours before the Beginning of the event!
The President laid out an ambitious plan of reform and correction, and to improve the standards of living of his citizens. The President started by pardoning some 170 prisoners serving long sentences for various crimes, and those who were never charged. President Macky Sall was the guest of Honor, and he read, in English, a very powerful message of unity and cooperation among their two peoples. The Republic of Gambia is enjoying tremendous global goodwill, and the inflow of aid and investment has started alreadfy. Many Gambian exiles have also returned to grace the occasion, or just to reconnect with family and friends.
